Széchenyi Chain Bridge

Széchenyi Chain Bridge is one of the oldest bridges on Danube river and it’s also one of the most popular attractions in Budapest. The bridge building process lasted from 1840th to 1849th year, while the idea behind its architecture style was made by the politician, Istvan Széchenyi, which is why it took his name.

As a matter of fact, this is the first permanent bridge in Hungary that back of its time used to be a real engineer miracle. Széchenyi Chain Bridge used to be determined as the connection between the East and the West, which is why it was a kind of a progress symbol for that historical time. The bridge connects Buda and Pest – the city’s east, respectively west side. Both of the edges in the bridge the main city squares are located – Roosvelt and Adma Clark.
Széchenyi Chain Bridge is 375 meters long and 16 meters wide, while its edges are decorated with stone lion statues. During the World War II the bridge was destroyed by the German forces aiming to prevent the attack by the Russian armies, but right after the end of the war Széchenyi Chain Bridge was reconstructed. These days, it’s part of UNESCO cultural and historical heritage.

What should I know before a visit of Széchenyi Chain Bridge?

You can reach Széchenyi Chain Bridge by tram – 19 if getting from Buda side – or with 2 from Pest side.
There’s no entrance fee for Széchenyi Chain Bridge, so you can visit it at any convenient for you time.
Each year the bridge hosts the annual fest Summer of Chain Bridge. It’s when the bridge is not accessible by car and it turns into a pedestrian zone with lots of interesting events.
Usually, the bridge is opened for pedestrians on 20th of August, which is the Saint Stephen’s Day.
Don’t miss to see the bridge during the evening, too, when it gets fantastic with so much lighting.

At the end of the bridge, by the side of Adam Clark square you can get on funicular that will take you to Buda Castle.
