Vondelpark

Except for being the biggest city park in Amsterdam, Vondelpark is also among the most popular parks all over the territory of Holland. It is a statement confirmed by the more than 10 million of people, who visit Vondelpark per year. The park is spread on an area of nearly 485 decares. The park is located at the west side of the museum square. As it was projected on a marshland, within every 30 years the park is required to be fully renovated. Otherwise, it would have been already fully flooded.

The park is a suitable place for walks, picnics, and sport activities or just to lie on the grass and enjoy the leisure time. You can visit Vondelpark in a completely typical Dutch manner, too – with a bike! There are officially arranged guide tours around the park for which you can buy a ticket in advance!

The background history of Vondelpark dates from 1864th year when a group of eminent citizens from a committee aiming to create a public park space in Amsterdam. These same people buy 8 hectares of land and assign a park project in an English style to the landscape architect, Jan David Zocher. Zocher creates beautiful gardens, lakes and paths. The park opened its gates for the entire local publicity back in 1865th year for the first time in a form of a park for horse riding and walks and named Nieuwe Park. The name Vondelpark was admitted a bit later, in 1867th year when the 3-meter bronze monument of the Dutch poet, Joost van den Vondel was placed on the park territory. Soon after that, Vondelpark was expanded to acquire its today’s size.

Vondelpark will impress you with its interesting trees and wild birds that sill nest on the park territory. Besides Vondel monument, you can also see some other pieces of art such as the abstract sculpture “Fish” from 1965th year made by Pablo Picasso, as well as many other cool masterpieces.

Vondelpark has six ploay zones and one big children’s playground. In the park an open theater is available to offer lots of free events during the summer time, including some awesome kid’s show programs.
